Frequently asked questions
Short answers about playing Pokénames solo or with friends.
What is Pokénames?
Pokénames is a free word game you play in the browser. Twenty-five Pokémon are dealt onto a board, and spymasters give one-word clues so their team can find its own Pokémon without touching the assassin. It is an unofficial fan take on Codenames by Czech Games Edition, with Pokémon in place of word cards.
Is Pokénames free?
Yes. It runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to download or buy.
Do I need an account?
No. You can start a solo game or host a room straight away. Your card collection and settings are saved on the device you play on.
Can I play alone?
Yes. In a solo challenge you are the guesser. A clever Pokémon partner such as Alakazam or Metagross gives you clues, and a Champion you choose, from Blue to Geeta, leads the other team. There are three difficulty levels: Rookie, Trainer and Champion.
How many people can play together?
Multiplayer rooms take 4 to 16 players split into two teams. Each team needs one spymaster and at least one operative. It plays best on a voice call or in the same room.
How do I play with friends online?
Choose Host a game, then send your friends the invite link or the six-character room code. You can also list your room publicly so other trainers can find it under Join a game.
Which Pokémon are included?
All 1,025 species in the National Pokédex, from Bulbasaur to Pecharunt. The host can limit the board to certain generations, and add regional variants, Mega Evolutions and other alternate forms.
What clues are allowed?
One word and a number. Clues can be about types, looks, evolutions, lore or anything else that links your Pokémon. You cannot say the name of a Pokémon that is still face down, spell it, or give its Pokédex number or position on the board.
What are the card packs?
Every match earns Stardust and XP. Stardust opens booster packs, which add Pokémon to your binder in finishes such as Reverse Holo, Holo Rare, Full Art and ex. Your collection then shows up on the board.
Is Pokénames official?
No. It is a noncommercial fan project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo, Creatures, GAME FREAK, The Pokémon Company or Czech Games Edition.
